About

Interfaith Montgomery is a membership organization and forum for faith leaders to dialogue about issues that affect Montgomery and the world. Our objectives are to learn from and with one another and to promote respect for our diversity of cultures and faith groups.

The organization formed in 2005 to provide a forum for diverse religious voices during that year’s 50th anniversary of the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Concern for one another and our shared community are the hallmarks of this group.

The Preamble of the Interfaith Montgomery Constitution

We, the spiritual leaders of different faiths, unite in Interfaith Montgomery to emphasize the universal elements in our own faith which form our sense of human community.

We respect difference among our faiths not as rejection or repudiation or assault on our personal faith but a valuable and necessary expression of the quality of diversity which has been built into the cornerstone of the American way of life.

This diversity leads us to the recognition that all religions have a common task of combating the corrosions of an amoral and materialistic world.

We commit ourselves to the function of promoting those spiritual qualities, ethical sensitivities, and moral disciplines without which our democracy may weaken.

We recognize that the formidable task of religion is to transcend institutionalism by universalism; exclusiveness by prophetic vision; self interest by demonstrating outgoing respect for all people.

We pledge to reflect religions’ wisdom, inspired ideals, sensitive standards, in faith, in life, and in humanity.

Interfaith Montgomery hosted a U. S. Secretary of State Delegation of aid workers from the Middle East in 2018.
