Ramadan Iftar Celebrated with Interfaith Friendship

Many of the Islamic community of Montgomery broke the fast of Ramadan and celebrated the event with friends of different faiths in a public way on May 5, 2021. Organized by Sana Imam, a local Muslim business owner, and Aya Zaied of the East Montgomery Islamic Society, the event was co-sponsored by the City of Montgomery.
Religious and secular leaders of Islamic, Jewish, Hindu and Christian communities of Montgomery were invited to address the crowd of approximately 75 people who gathered for a catered meal within the former Union Station lobby downtown.
It was remarked that this was the first public occasion in which leaders of the Islamic community and their culture had been celebrated officially by leaders of the City of Montgomery. The Mayor of Montgomery, Steven L. Reed and a state senator serving the Montgomery locality, Kirk Hatcher, both addressed the diverse crowd and affirmed their desire to publicly embrace the city’s religious diversity.
